Skool Daze

When we are young, school can be a fun experience for most of us. We get to color, have nap time and play at recess. However, it seems, we seem to lose interest in school when it actually involves work. Homework is most hated in schools. Why? Well, I hated homework because if I was inside doing homework, I wasn't outside playing and having fun. The thing teachers don't tell us students is homework is necesary to reinforce what has been taught during that days lessons. Plus, the little bit of homework they give you each night is meant to prepare you for the immense amount of homework they will give you in college.

I know a lot of you are saying, "I'm not going to college, I don't have to." And some of you are saying, "I don't know what I want to go to college for." The answer to both of those statements is simple. College is necesary. I would venture to say that college is MANDATORY these days. More and more companies are requiring a degree of some sort. Whether it is an Associates (aquired by completing at least two years in a junior college) or a BA/BS (acquired by completing at least four years at a college or university), companies these days are less apt to hire anyone right out of high school. High school drop-outs rarely ever get hired in a job that will pay enough to live on. The reality is, in order to survive in this inflated economic society, you need a degree on some sort.

I know what some of you are thinking, "It's not fair." Well, it is. If you were the owner of a company that needed someone to build a database for a large bank, would you hire a kid, or an adult, off the street that claimed they could do the job? Or, would you hire the person with the degree in that field that proves he has the training and the know how to get the job done? That person off the street may have the kow how to complete the job. But, how will the employer know that from an application that says there is no college experience.

"But, I can't afford college." That is no longer a viable excuse. The government and many other companies and societies have set aside funds for that very thing. To name a few, BOG Grants, PEL Grants and, in California, the CAL grant. Also, for those who qualify there is Finacial Aid available in most states. It's a new world. One where just having the know how isn't enough. Will you have what it takes to survive?
